The computer wound cotton filter element filters down to one
micron absolute, removing over 80% of the wear particles 2
microns and larger. Excess water is readily absorbed, by
retaining over 60cc of water in the EK 15 filter. This unit has 279
square inches of surface area to clean the oil. Abrasive engine wear can be substantially reduced with: 1) An increase in filter single pass efficiency 2) Controlling the abrasive contaminants in the range of 2 to 22 microns in the lube oil is necessary for controlling engine wear. 3) The micron rating of a filter, as established in a single pass efficiency test, does an excellent job in indicating the filters ability to remove abrasive particles in the engine lube system. |

Lube Oil Filtration Effect on Diesel Engine Wear
Cummins Engine Company Conclusions drawn after extensive tests, documented in Journal 710813, outline the benefits obtained by incorporation of a by-pass filtration unit into the oil system. The Enviro-Kleen Filtration System is a supplemental filtering system that does not interfere with the main lubrication of the engine. The cost factors considered in this study were initial filter cost, scheduled maintenance cost (including lubrication oil, filter, elements and labor) and the engine overhaul cost. The additional cost of lubricating oil and by-pass filter element is offset by the extended oil and filter
change
periods possible with the by-pass filter.
This evaluation has shown the use of a full-flow filtration, combined
with
by-pass lubricating oil filtration, will result in extension of engine
wear life up
to two to three times the wear life obtainable with standard equipment.
Therefore, the use of by-pass oil filters, coupled with a high grade
motor
oil, results in the overall lowest total cost to the engine user.
Superior filtration is the key element in controlling wear. By
eliminating
particulates from the oil flow, the hydrodynamics of clean oil have the
opportunity to function as they were designed: to keep metal to metal
contact
to a bare minimum level, which protects and preserves engine life.
